Heavy rains continue in Kerala, toll at 38

IDUKKI: Flood situation improved marginally in Kerala with water level in Idukki reservoir receding for the second straight day from 2,400.6ft on Saturday to 2,398.68ft on Sunday evening. However, heavy rain continued in the catchment areas of the reservoir on Sunday. Over the past 24 hours, Idukki recorded an average rainfall of 20.86mm.

With the death of a 58-year-old woman in a house collapse in Wayanad, the toll in current floods in the state has reached 38. Six people are missing. After a lull, heavy rain battered Wayanad on Sunday.

Kerala floods: Thousands in relief camps stare at bleak future

According to the latest official figures, more than 60,000 people, including women, toddlers and senior citizens, have been lodged in various relief camps across 14 districts of the southern state following the unprecedented monsoon rains that triggered floods and landslips in several places.


Wayanad district collector A R Ajayakumar has announced a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, on Monday.
All three shutters of Pothundy dam were opened on Sunday and the final warning to open the shutters of Chulliyar, Walayar and Meenkara reservoirs were issued as the water level had crossed the danger mark.
District collector D Balamurali said all three shutters of Pothundy reservoir were opened as a precautionary measure on Sunday as the water level rose to 107.71m. Shutters of Meenkara and Walayar dams will also be opened at any time.
Meanwhile, water level in Mullaperiyar dam rose to 135.2ft on Sunday morning. Kerala State Electricity Board officials said the shutters of Cheruthony dam will remain open for the time being.
