Stalin: I’d have died had Karunanidhi not been buried on Marina Beach

CHENNAI: DMK working president M K Stalin on Tuesday said he would have died if his father and party president M Karunanidhi’s mortal remains had not been buried on Marina Beach.

Speaking at an executive committee meeting of the party which was held here to condole the death of Karunanidhi, Stalin narrated his meeting with Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami at the latter’s residence on August 7, a few hours before his father died.

He said, "Doctors told us that only a few hours were left for Thalaivar (Karunanidhi). We considered how to approach the government for a space on Marina Beach. Senior leaders told me not to meet the CM in person and allow party leaders to meet him. But leaving aside my honour, I went to the chief minister's residence," said Stalin.

He said, “I held the hands of Palaniswami and sought a space on Marina Beach to bury the former chief minister. Palaniswami said law did not permit giving a space on Marina, and legal opinion was also against it. But I told him that it was possible to change the legal opinion as we had also been in power. Just to make us leave his residence, the CM said he would consider," said Stalin.

The DMK working president said soon after Karunanidhi’s death had been announced, senior party leaders once again had met chief minister and pleaded with him for a space on Marina. “But within 10 minutes, they returned and told me that the chief minister had refused to allot a space on Marina.”
"It is only at this stage that advocate Wilson asked my permission to approach the high court. If at all I should thank someone for getting us a space on Marina, it is only our legal wing led by Wilson," said Stalin.
