1st ODI: Kohli, Rohit trample West Indies in India's 8-wicket win

NEW DELHI: After mauling West Indies 2-0 in the Test series, India began the ODI series in an emphatic manner as they inflicted a crushing eight-wicket defeat on the visitors in the first match at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Sunday.

Skipper Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma notched up centuries to help India chase down a mammoth 323-run target in just 42.1 overs. Rohit and Ambati Rayudu remained unbeaten on 152 and 22 respectively.

With this victory, India lead the five-match series 1-0. The second ODI will be played on October 24 in Vizag.

After being asked to bat, West Indies bounced back from their Test series debacle to post a challenging 322 for eight courtesy Shimron Hetmyer's 106-run knock off just 78 balls.

Kohli and Rohit stitched a 246-run stand for the second wicket - highest for India while batting second in ODIs - to take the hosts closer to victory before the former was dismissed by Devendra Bishoo in the 33rd over.

The 29-year-old brought up his 36th ODI century in just 88 balls and smacked 22 fours and two sixes during the course of his 140-run innings off 107 balls.

Chasing 323, India suffered an early blow when debutant Oshane Thomas struck to dismiss Shikhar Dhawan in the second over to take his maiden international wicket.

Making a comeback to ODI fold after skipping the Asia Cup, Kohli launched a scathing attack on listless West Indies bowling from the word go and raced to his half-century in just 35 balls with the help of 10 boundaries.

Earlier, the 21-year-old Hetmyer, who led West Indies to their first Under-19 World Cup title in Bangladesh in 2016, put to sword an under strength Indian attack to raise his third ODI hundred.

He punished the Indian bowlers with six fours and as many sixes in his entertaining 78-ball knock.

In the absence of their frontline pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah, who have been rested for the first two ODIs, India struggled to contain the run-flow against the Caribbean side.

The bowling looked lacklustre while the fielding was shoddy as India, on a high after their Test series win, seemed to have underestimated their opponents.

The Guyanese lad Hetmyer brought up his half-century in 41 balls and raced two fifty plus partnerships with Rovman Powell (22) and skipper Jason Holder (38).

Hetmyer notched up his century by lofting Mohammed Shami for a six over extra cover. While he used brute force against the pace, Hetmyer also looked fluent against the spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravindra Jadeja before being dismissed by the latter after immediately reaching the milestone-mark.

Visiting skipper Holder on the eve of the match had said 300-plus is the benchmark of ODI cricket and his young batsmen responded well with Devendra Bishoo taking the team past the milestone in the penultimate over.
Opener Kieran Powell set up the foundation with a 39-ball 51 (6x4, 2x6) in a 67-run stand for the second wicket with Shai Hope (32).
Powell and his debutant opening partner Chandrapaul Hemraj dealt in boundaries against Shami and Yadav.
West Indies lost three wickets in quick succession but the Guyana youngster came to take charge after Marlon Samuels departed for a duck in his landmark 200th ODI.
