Aircel Maxis case: ED charges P Chidambaram

NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate on Thursday filed a supplementary chargesheet in the Aircel-Maxis case in Delhi's Patiala House Court.

The ED has listed a total of nine people including P Chidambaram as accused in the chargesheet. Chidambaram's chartered accountant has also been named in the chargesheet, according to TV reports.

The court has fixed November 26 as the date for consideration of the chargesheet.

Earlier in June, the ED had named Chidambaram's son Karti in the case.

The Aircel-Maxis deal case, which emerged out of 2G spectrum cases, pertains to a grant by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) to M/S Global Communication Holding Services Ltd for investment in Aircel.
The ED had earlier said that the FIPB approval granted in 2006 by Chidambaram was beyond his mandate as he was only authorised to accord approval on project proposals up to Rs 600 crore.
The ED claims that an alleged payment of Rs 26 lakh was made by Aircel Televentures Limited to ASCPL, a firm allegedly linked to Karti, within a few days of this FIPB approval. It said it is investigating "the circumstances of said FIPB approval granted by the then finance minister (Chidambaram)".
FIPB approval in the Aircel-Maxis FDI case was granted in March 2006 by the senior Chidambaram even though he was competent to accord approval on project proposals only up to Rs 600 crore and beyond that it required the approval of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), the ED said.
