Delhi: 8-year-old dies after playground scuffle

NEW DELHI: Four boys, aged between 10 and 12, were apprehended for allegedly being involved in the death of an eight-year-old boy at Begumpur village near Malviya Nagar in south Delhi on Thursday. Police were informed about the incident around 6pm when the child succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital.

A probe has revealed that the child suffered internal head injuries during a scuffle with the accused boys over playing on a vacant plot. DCP (south) Vijay Kumar said the incident happened around 10am. The deceased child, Azeem, was a student of Darul Uloom Faridiya madrassa. The accused boys are from nearby areas.

Locals said that Azeem and other students from the madrassa were playing cricket when the accused boys asked them to move away. When they refused, a scuffle ensued during which Azeem was pushed to the ground and lost consciousness. The others ran inside the madrassa and informed the clerics about the incident. Azeem was rushed to a private hospital where doctors admitted him to the ICU. He was declared dead on Thursday evening.

“We received a call from one of the clerics after which the body was sent for autopsy,” said DCP Kumar. The preliminary inquiry showed no visible injuries on the child’s body and police suspect that he may have died due to internal bleeding. A case of murder has been registered.
Residents said that children from the nearby localities had got into an argument with those at the madrassa earlier too over playing on the vacant plot since there are no other parks in the vicinity. However, the matter was resolved amicably.
Azeem was a resident of Mewat in Haryana and had been staying at the madrassa for the past two years for studies along with 5-6 children from the same village. His father is a cleric at their village mosque.
The accused children were produced before a juvenile justice board and are being counselled. Additional forces were deployed at night after rumours started circulating about communal tension in the colony.
