Graft case: CBI gets 7-day custody of its officer

NEW DELHI: CBI deputy SP Devender Kumar who was yesterday taken into custody in connection with bribery allegations involving its special director and second-in-command Rakesh Asthana, has been sent to 7-day CBI custody.

Special CBI Judge Santosh Snehi Mann remanded Kumar to the custody of CBI, which had sought ten days of custodial interrogation of the accused official alleging that it has recovered incriminating documents after raiding his office and residence.

Yesterday, Kumar — who was earlier the investigating officer in a case involving meat exporter Moin Qureshi — was arrested on the allegations of forgery in recording the statement of Sathish Sana, who had alleged to have paid bribes to get relief in the case, they said.

The investigating agency had sought his custody for 10 days and told Special CBI Judge Santosh Snehi Mann that incriminating documents and evidence found after raiding his office and residence.


It claimed that Kumar was part of extortion racket being run in the garb of investigation.
Kumar's counsel opposed the submission and moved a bail plea before the court. The hearing in the case in underway.
CBI has sought the court's nod to add some more sections in the present FIR against accused including Kumar.
The present case is an effort to derail a separate case against meat exporter Moin Qureshi, the CBI has informed the court.
