AMARAVATI: After withdrawing the general consent to the CBI to investigate cases in Andhra Pradesh, chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu is planning to approach the Supreme Court to curtail the powers of central agencies like the Income Tax department and Enforcement Directorate before general elections.
A TDP MP told TOI that a common minimum programme (CMP) with all anti-BJP parties will be chalked out in Delhi. Once the CMP is ready, parties will give a representation to all central agencies to stop following the Centre’s political agenda. This will be followed by another consultation with the parties. If there is a need and once there is consensus, the parties will approach the Supreme Court.
“We have worked out several plans, including taking legal recourse. We will switch to Plan B, depending on the requirement,” TDP member and agriculture minister Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy told TOI on Sunday. Although recent searches against TDP leaders have not yielded any conclusive evidence so far, many of them say they were rattled after finding tax officials at their doorstep. TDP sources said Naidu has already discussed the issue with senior leaders in TDP and his legal advisers. The move follows Naidu’s allegation that the NDA government is targeting opposition leaders through central agencies to scare them before polls. Naidu may seek the intervention of the apex court to restrict the central agencies from conducting searches on opposition leaders six months before any poll.
“It is an open secret that I-T department started searches on business houses owned by TDP leaders, including those of MP CM Ramesh, MLA Pothula Ramarao and former MLA Beeda Mastan Rao only after we parted ways with the NDA,” another senior TDP leader said.
Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu is planning to convince senior opposition leaders on the need to file a PIL or writ in the Supreme Court seeking relief from central agencies targeting opposition parties. “We need to restrict the selective activities of IT and ED at least for six months before general or assembly elections,” a senior TDP leader observed. Naidu, who is scheduled to meet WB CM Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata on Monday, is likely to discuss the issue with her. Naidu is also likely to discuss the issue with other opposition leaders including Sharad Pawar, Stalin and Mulayam Singh Yadav who the Andhra CM is scheduled to meet in New Delhi on November 22 for the proposed anti-BJP grand alliance.
