Gaja cyclone wreaks damage in Tamil Nadu

TRICHY: Severe cyclonic storm Gaja that crossed Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast between Nagapattinam and Vedaranniyam in the early hours of Friday -- between 12.30am and 2.30am -- with wind a speed of 100-110kmph gusting to 120kmph brought heavy rain in the coastal districts, said the India Meteorological Department.
There were no reports of any loss of lives thanks to the elaborate arrangements and precautionary measures.

The cyclone caused damage to properties, particularly in Vedharanyam in Nagapattinam district.

The strong winds damaged several thatched houses and uprooted many trees in Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Pudukkottai districts.

Seawater inundated many fishing hamlets, including Keechankuppam and Akkaraipettai, in Nagapattinam district.


Power supply was suspended in Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Pudukkottai, Karaikal, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Trichy districts.
Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Trichy and Ariyalur districts have also received moderate to heavy rain.
A holiday has been announced for schools and colleges in Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Trichy, Ariyalur, Madurai and Theni districts on Friday.
