Kamal Haasan says his party ready to contest all 20 seats in TN bypolls

CHENNAI: Actor and president of Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) Kamal Haasan on Wednesday said his party is ready to contest bypolls to 20 assembly seats in Tamil Nadu. His party has already appointed 80% of field workers in all these 20 assembly segments.

“No one is sure when or whether the bypolls will be held. However, we are ready to contest the polls as and when they are held,” Kamal said here.

Addressing the media on his 64th birthday, the actor said his party had already filled 80% of posts at the field level in all these 20 assembly seats.

Responding to questions from the media, Kamal said he was a tool of the people and not that of any political party or a group.

“If corruption is removed, measures taken through every state government department will flourish,” Kamal said.

He declined to comment on the developments in Sri Lanka. “When we have so many issues unresolved in our nation, there is no purpose commenting on developments in another country,” Kamal said.
DMK president M K Stalin and Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president called up Kamal and extended their birthday greetings to him.
Bypolls were necessitated after the Madras High Court upheld the Tamil Nadu Speaker's decision to disqualify 18 AIADMK MLAs under the anti-defection law.
Two other seats- Tiruvarur and Thiruparankundram- fell vacant after the deaths of M Karunanidhi and A K Bose.
